We all love pancakes, but I like to keep grains to a minimum. I’m in love with Birch Bender’s pancake mix. It’s just almond flour, cassava (a root vegetable) flour, and coconut flour. No sugar. Today I made pear and cardamom cakes with pear syrup. Nothing but fruit. No sugar added. Boom! Everyone knows and loves broccoli salad, but there’s traditionally 2 cups of mayo in this much salad along with some sugar. That’s yummy, but we can do so much better than that! Fresh juice! I love to make it once a week! Turmeric is supposed to be lovely for joints, pineapple for inflammation, and celery for skin. Are they, though?! Since we’re not eating them in a vacuum, and have lots of other things going on in our lives, who knows?! I’m sure your mileage may vary, but when someone complains about an elbow or knee, they ask me to make turmeric juice and it stops. Either way, getting lots of extra produce in our diets is always a great idea.

My husband and I
run jog 5 miles 3 times a week and do kettlebells, bike, or yoga another 3. I remember reading years ago (probably Dr. Weil) that pineapple, garlic, and ginger were great for inflammation and joint health. Okay! Those are easy ingredients to keep in the rotation. Do they work? Well, in regular everyday life, are you really going to scientifically test things in isolation to know? No, of course not. They’re all tasty, and I’ve felt fine up til now, so I’m keeping them in. 😉 About a year ago my elbow started hurting. I tried to ignore it. But it continued hurting. Badly. Was it the kettlebells? Was it that I held my water bottle in the same hand every time I run? Was it because I’m forty-something and time is really unkind? Who knows?! I’ve always been more of a smoothie fan, and my juicer never got much love. Smoothies leave you feeling nice and full. Then I found Ziggy Marley’s cookbook, Ziggy Marley and Family Cookbook: Delicious Meals Made With Whole, Organic Ingredients from the Marley Kitchen, and everything was delicious and super nutritious, so I decided to give his juices a try. I loved them! They’re filled with interesting flavor. Fantastic. When you want a nice vitamin punch, there’s nothing like juice. They leave me feeling extra alive. It’s not a juice book. There are only 9 juice recipes in it, but they’re special.
