The Home Bartender is perfect for anyone looking for an easy peasy cocktail book. The cocktails have 4 ingredients or less (some are 5 if you count the garnish). The ingredients themselves are pretty normal, so if you have a basic bar, you wont have to hunt down a whole lot of specialty ingredients. <I had to add one bottle to my collection – strawberry vodka.> But, there’s all kinds of different drinks in here. The measurements are different from most books. Instead of ounces, he uses parts. One part lime juice, two parts rum…. I used an ounce as the unit for all the wet stuff. He does mention that if measurements are your jam, a dash is about 1 teaspoon and a splash is about 1 tablespoon. I’ve been playing in a cocktail book that’s just the thing for when you want a really special cocktail, Texas Cocktails. I flagged so many interesting drinks to try! Some are quick, while others take some planning and patience. I did find that I needed to expand my bitters collection, but Amazon had everything. I generally used the preferred brands noted in the recipes, but subbed in where I needed to.
If you’re a candied jalapeño fan, you *have to* try this cocktail. Oh my gosh, is it ever wonderful! Thanks to Cider Mill Press for letting me share it with you! I’ll get to my thoughts on all the drinks we tried right after the recipe.

I have an absolute favorite cocktail book and it really shines in the summer, Tipsy Texan: Spirits and Cocktails from the Lone Star State. The author, David Alan, is a legend in Texas. If you go down to Franklin BBQ in Austin, you’ll see a sandwich up on the board, called the Tipsy Texan and it was created for David. I still haven’t tried that. Because brisket. And ribs. Nice excuse to drive back down, don’t you think?! Anyway, this cocktail book is amazing. Truly. There are so many complex fruit drinks in there that are perfection out in the hot sun. A huge thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing for letting me share the recipe for Hot Summer Night with you! It’s the best cocktail I’ve ever had. Lemon lovers, meet your new favorite drink! Rahr Brewery does an Oktoberfest 5K each year. People dress in lederhosen and dirndls and go for a run. Afterwards, there’s beer, brats, and music. It’s ridiculously fun. Last year, Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co. (TX Whiskey) were handing out whiskey shots mid-course. Nice.
Well, my husband and I were having a better run than usual, and they handed me a whiskey shot and I tipped it back just like I would those cups of water they hand you while you’re making your way. While running. I know! I coughed hard, and runners around me were cracking up, because they were thoughtful enough to stop and sip. Show offs! 😉 Just kidding. A lady from TX Whiskey held up a cup and said, “Drink this.” I laughed and coughed out a, “No!” with my hand outstretched in the halt position. She said, “No. Really. Trust me. It’s a nice chaser.” I took a sip. It was absolutely lovely. Smooth, a little sweet, and super refreshing. It hit the spot. I was craving that later on a nice hot day, and contacted them. You may be wondering – Oktoberfest? Hot day? Oktoberfest happens in September and it’s still totally hot in Texas. It’s summer food and drink weather *mostly* from April til October. You know, with the occasional winter coat and hail…. The cocktail’s called Big Rosie, and it’s the perfect summery sunshine drink. Killer with barbecue. And it’s silly easy to make.
