My husband and I
run jog 5 miles 3 times a week and do kettlebells, bike, or yoga another 3. I remember reading years ago (probably Dr. Weil) that pineapple, garlic, and ginger were great for inflammation and joint health. Okay! Those are easy ingredients to keep in the rotation. Do they work? Well, in regular everyday life, are you really going to scientifically test things in isolation to know? No, of course not. They’re all tasty, and I’ve felt fine up til now, so I’m keeping them in. 😉 About a year ago my elbow started hurting. I tried to ignore it. But it continued hurting. Badly. Was it the kettlebells? Was it that I held my water bottle in the same hand every time I run? Was it because I’m forty-something and time is really unkind? Who knows?! I was playing in a book, Ovenless Desserts, and came across a Roasted Marshmallow Milkshake. That sounded fabulous. I made it and tasted it and was immediately transported to a campfire out in the woods. I’m a barbecue fanatic. I was out back at 7 this morning getting the fire going to smoke dinner. I adore injections of smokiness wherever the opportunity strikes. Smoky marshmallows. What if you added a little more smokiness with a shot of mezcal? Oh gosh, is that ever good! I’d like to introduce you to my favorite boozy milkshake, the Roasted Marshmallow and Mezcal Milkshake. Thank you to Mamie Fennimore for the inspiration and thank you to Cider Mill Press for letting me share it with you! If you’re making this for small people, omit the mezcal and make it as the author intended! 😀 I’ll tell you more about that book after the recipe. Have you tried your hand at the lovely spiced cookies, Speculaas? I love the Springerle recipe from King Arthur Flour. I just use 1 1/2 times the spices they call for for a really flavorful cookie. My adapted version is below. Continue reading “Speculaas Springerle, two ways.”

Kevin Zraly Windows on the World Complete Wine Course: Revised, Updated & Expanded Edition
This is an amazing book and has major gift potential for any wine enthusiast. As the title promises, this book will teach you all about wine appreciation. It’s a huge volume, and intimidating at first glance, but really actionable once you dive in. He’s thorough and it’s chock-full of interesting tangents and random factoids to delight even the very geekiest among us.
You’ll know exactly what bottle to bring for any dinner party. Guest like a boss!
I jokingly apologized to my husband for the havoc I was about to wreak on our bank account playing in this book. We took the book to the Total Wine down the street, sticky notes flapping from the pages we were starting with, excited to embark on the world’s best scavenger hunt for grown-ups. To my delighted surprise, working through his recommended lists, our basket was much more affordable than I’d anticipated. It was really quite reasonable. Hooray!
A huge thanks to Sterling Publishing for letting me take you with me on my grown-up scavenger hunt! Continue reading “Perfect gift for the wine enthusiast. Kevin Zraly Windows on the World Complete Wine Course – revised, updated & expanded!”

Hope you all had the best Thanksgiving! My kids had a whole week off for Thanksgiving, so we decided to have Thanksgiving dinner early and go be thankful up in the Smoky Mountains for a week! We’d stopped in Gatlinburg on the way to Washington D.C. once, and had the full Jack Skellington reaction of “What is this place??” We went back the following summer and gave it a proper exploration. It is the perfect blend of cheesy tourist stuff and amazing natural resources. Great family spot. We decided to head back and rented an Airbnb up in the mountains.
